Ajeh, Thank you for all your patience! In the end it was a setting on the server. Interesting that when I told them that I was going to move to another server, they suddenly took the problem serious.
Here is a copy of what they wrote to me this morning:
"Hello,
This should be corrected now. Could you please have a check now.
The issue was with suhosin.session.encrypt being ON .suhosin's encryption scheme uses the whole string, and so even though the cookie id was the same (and so apache/php used the same named session file) suhosin couldn't unencrypt the data using the other docroot, and so wiped the session, before continuing."
Thanks for the update and posting the cause of the issue and that you were able to get this fixed ...
