Files ending in .php, .html, .css, .htaccess, .txt, etc should normally be uploaded in ascii.
Image files should be uploaded in binary.
Most good FTP programs automatically handle selecting the right option for you nowadays.

The reply from Dr.B is technically correct, but personally I use binary for all filetypes.

The reason is simple. Binary mode will transfer files without modifying them in any way no matter what the filetype is.

Ascii Mode on the other hand will often modify EOL (end of line) characters, which is generally fine for true ASCII files, but can be fatal for any other filetype.

    Just my 2cents worth.

Rod makes a good point. Something worth considering especially if you find your files get double-spaced after uploading and/or downloading them using your FTP program.
