Changing button images and types GIF to PNG

I want to install custom color buttons in my Zen Cart and need to know where to change the code (if need be) to use PNG type images instead of GIFs.

I intend to make the buttons I want to change and rename them exactly the way they are presently named, except for the .png extension, e.g., old image: add_to_cart.gif; new image: add_to_cart.png.

Will any changes to the base code or stylesheets be required to do this successfully?

I am running version 1.3.8a.

It's a template change; copy

includes/languages/english/button_names.php
to
includes/languages/english/YOUR TEMPLATE/button_names.php

and modify the filenames.
