Need to create handling fees for fragile items

Hi,

I've just recently gotten into Zencart and I am setting it up for the first time. I am using v1.3.8a.

I searched the wiki and the forum but nothing quite matches my situation and I can't seem to deduce a variation for my situation.

My issue is I don't know how to create a shipping setup for handling fees. Client has several items in inventory that are fragile, and require shipping separately from other items, so they incur a handling fee on top of whatever is in the order at checkout.

My client is currently using an estimated shipping tabled rate for shipping fees based on total cost of items in cart. She does not want to use any USPS or UPS modules, or any that calculate shipping by weight&destination. It's all table rates.

Is there a way to add in handling fees on a per item basis? So the estimated shipping comes out on the table rate, but + $$ per item that is on the fragile list. I hope I am being coherent. Help would be much appreciated.

You're going to have to write custom software to deal with this.

Crap, I was afraid of that.

I'm wondering if I can fake it with use of attributes, but I was hoping for something that's less like a hack.

Well I found a solution that works for me. I'm posting it here in case anyone else needs it.

What I did was I made an attribute name called "Handling fee" and set it to radiobutton

Then I made an attribute value and called it "I accept the handling fee"

Applied it to the item, set it to required, automatically selected, and had the handling fee applied to the base price of the item. Seems to be working out.
