How many concurrent shoppers can Zen Cart support?

Hi All,

Can anyone comment on how many concurrent shoppers Zen Cart can handle realistically?

I am trying to find out from those that have direct experience if I can use Zen Cart as a solution for a store with 5000 products and 500 shoppers.

I don't mean 500 customer accounts, I mean 500 customers online browsing and checking out at the same time.

I know this question has many variables so lets assume:
- latest stable ZC (1.3.8?)
- a certified host
- out of the box install, no changes except adding products/categories
- no extra add-ons
- All product images are properly sized small/med/large

Maybe out of the box install is not a good idea? I'm sure there are a few admin/config tweaks that can help performance like caching, gzip, etc.?

Also reporting what your own shops average will help me out.

Zen Cart, the program, has no restrictions. That is strictly a server capacity question.

I contacted one of the certified hosts listed on this site and they said they should be able to handle my posted numbers without problem.
