Default 501 error at checkout / Paypal

I am getting a 500 error when I try to navigate through my checkout to paypal. This is what it says:

An error occurred when we tried to contact the payment processor. Please try again, select an alternate payment method, or contact the store owner for assistance. () - (56) Received HTTP code 501 from proxy after CONNECT

I believe my payment module is configured correctly. I have a current API username, password and signature -- all triple checked and updated.

I asked my webhost for help, but they said that this is not their area.

So, what's going on? What do I have to fix?

    Thank you!!

Sounds like you have enabled the CURL Proxy for some unknown reason.
Turn it off in Admin->Configuration->My Store->CURL Proxy

I just remember that I did enable the CURL, because something I was doing required it to be enabled. I can't remember what! Perhaps it had something to do with Easy Populate? I guess I'll find out when something else goes haywire.
