does anyone have a clue how to achieve that? I am guessing playing with the query database but I dont know which part to edit..

If you expect an answer, you should ask a more specific question. What products are you talking about? You can change a number of settings in Configuration > Index Listing

I am looking to change featured products not to be 3rows with 3columns products but one row with 5columns products

Go to your admin, Configuration->Index Listing->Featured Products Columns per Row. Change that from 3 to 5.

And in Configuration > Maxumim Values Change New Products to show 5
