Subcategories not showing in category page center

I know this has been posted about a zillion times, but I have researched this problem. Done EVERYTHING previous threads have advised and still nothing!

When I click on a category in the sidebox and it opens to the category page, my subcategories do not show in the top center of the page. I have switched to the default template and the subcategories DO show BUT they show twice instead of just once.

Product Listing>
Show SubCategories on Main Page while navigating = 1

Layout Settings>
Categories - Always Open to Show SubCategories = 1

I do not have products placed in categories along with sub categories. The tpl_index_categories.php is the default file with no changes made. Zen version is 1.3.8a

I have no idea what I'm missing. I've been trying to figure this out for weeks!

Go to the Tools ... Developers Tool Kit ...

In the bottom input box enter:
category_row.php

and select Catalog and click SEARCH ...

See if the require has been commented out or is missing from your template ...

If you do not find it, try switching to the Classic Template ... does it work? If so, then your template is either missing the code or the code is commented out ...

Seems like everyone is asking the same question and the answers dry up before a solution is identified.

This is a basic requirement - top of the page Category link, the category contains subcategories with products in (in my case the products are all linked copies of products whose main categories are different).

When a visitor clicks on the category no sub category appears - in my case products added to those sub categories fill the screen as "new products added for January".

BUT NO SUBCATEGORIES - Everything is turned on in Admin as far as I have ascertained. I have tried all other available suggestions on this forum - SQL patch failed because the thing already exists, tried messing with the define categories code - no effect.

Please assist.

Thanks - willing to try anything once - but still concerned that I am unable to get core functionality to work as published. If this is a GUI for functions that don't work then it will not have solved anything. But if it is a work around that works - well that is great and it looks good too. :)

I could be mistaken but I cant recall a single zen cart that had a horizontal drop down menu built into the core.

I believe that is only for the sidebox categories

Edit: It should just place the sub categories on each page in the top center, but not a drop down.

Is that the issue you are having is the subcategories are not showing in a box like manner on the page like the first pic?

Anyone - my issue here is that the subcategories don't appear at all. I am not sure that adding a fancy GUI is going to start them working - more likely to add 4 hours work only to have a prettier screw up on screen.

Again this is basic Zen Cart stuff - if category functions don't work (or simply that I am not working them correctly) then this is failure at the core level. And it seems I am not the only one having this problem whether it exists in the software or out of user stupidity.

In any case is anyone please clued up how this is supposed to work or how to trouble shoot it when it does not.
