compatibility view or not?

Why do some websites trigger compatibility view to On when using IE and some sites do not? Using ZC it seems that it will automatically trigger to On. How do we code ZC so that comp view does not automatically turn on? google doesn't trigger Compview On while yahoo does. Is there a standard to how things should be done?

You can force the site into Compatibility View (IE7) by adding:

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7">

I think is a mistake, and the sure sign of a lazy designer who can't be bothered to adapt his/her work to all popular browsers.

That said, it's particularly dumb in this case. There may be rational reasons to continue to use IE6 (many companies have internal software which require it), but none I'm aware of to use IE7 rather than upgrading to IE8 unless you have an illegal copy of Windows.
