    Configuration > Layout Settings >
Categories - Always Show on Main Page >set to 1
Main Page - Opens with Category >set to category id

I have a similar and related query, so won't start a fresh thread.
I want my homepage to show 4 products - the same ones each time. Of course, I may want to change the displayed products from time to time so am I right in thinking that I should create a new Category called "homepage" and then simply set "Opens with Category" to this category ID? Is there any way to then hide that category from the menu system?

Another approach would be to create a custom homepage template.

    I'm open to any suggestions.

Though I've not done this, the hideCategories module might let you do this.. It will hide the category from the category menu system.. Not sure if the hidden category will display when you set the "Opens with Category" to the hidden category ID.. (Though it probably would)

Thanks, I'll take a look at that.
I need to work out how to put products into multiple categories. I'm assuming that is possible with the out-of-the-box software.

You can either copy products to different categories or link products to different categories. The difference is that linked products are only in the database once. If you copy the product, you're creating a new product.

For each products in admin>catalog>categories/products, there's a column labeled "Action". If you click on the C, you'll be presented with the option of copying or linking the product.

Thanks. I found that yesterday too. I'm finding that Zen Cart is extremely well featured and powerful, but you have to really dig around to find what you want.
I'm getting there though. Maybe I should invest in the book.

For my specific requirements, I've found that the Featured Products option will probably do what I want better than linked products in a new category.
