Luxury Tax Mod?

I have a client who sells designer clothing and jewelry. In our state, clothing is tax exempt, if the garment is priced less than $750. Over $750, sales tax is charged on the difference - the amount over $750. In other words, an $800 gown is charged sales tax on $50.

Has anyone done a mod for this? I've run through the code, and it looks like there are a number of places sales tax is calculated, and no easy way to differentiate between items taxed on the full amount and ones taxed on a partial amount.

So I'll start the ball rolling ... as you observe, this is a very specific requirement and, sorry, I've not seen a mod that does it.

But a couple of questions to help clarify the problem.

Is it a per item or the total order where the tax comes in?

If you have 2 items for $800 and 2 at $500 (Total $2600)
Do you pay tax on $2600-$750 = $1850
or pay tax on 2 x $50 = $100

and is there a definition of what an item is?
eg: 2 piece outfit including a belt
Is that 1 item or 3 items?

Kuroi... What about creating a new TAX CLASS and RATE, and then applying it to these sorts of products?
