Default How do I handle sales tax?

    Hey everyone,

Just hit the ground running with my zen cart online store. However, before I really get going, I need to know how to handle taxes. My business is listed in AR; however, it will utilize dropshipping (from who knows where). So how do I charge taxes and to whom?

I'm very confused. No idea who I charge sales tax to...

First, we'll start by letting you know that Arkansas has a 6.0% sales tax rate, if you didn't know that.

    Now, go to Admin>Locations/Taxes>Tax Rates

The default tax rate you will see there is for Florida. Click the Edit button, and change all occurrences of Florida to Arkansas with the exception of the FL, which will change to AR. You will also change all occurrences of the 7.0% to 6.0%.

That's it. You're done. Zen-Cart will take care of the rest.
Just make sure when you're creating products, you set them to be "taxable goods"
See, you CAN'T charge sales tax to someone from outside your state, so the only people that will get charged taxes will be those people who make orders that are from AR.

    Hope this helps.

So Zen Cart will know if they are from AR? Based on shipping address I guess?

Well, they have to create an account, so it will start by using that information, which will be their billing information. If it just used shipping information, and an AR customer made a purchase, then sent it to their "Auntie Em" in CA, you wouldn't get your taxes.

after ages of putting in products and not specifying them as "Taxable Goods" - I finally figured out why sales tax was not being charged for in-state sales. - how dumb !!! Anyway, is there some magic trick that I can do that will automatically redo all my products correctly? Thanks

I am new to Zen cart. I am trying to set up my cart. How do I designate county taxes, and how does ZenCart know which county my customers live in.

You can use easy populate to add the tax to the product.

You don't unless, I believe, you're selling food, tobacco, or alcohol. You will just collect State Sales Taxes.
