Default 500 Internal Server Error - EZ Pages

Ok this has happened on a a few sites i have worked on over the course of the year - all different hosts and (although all Linux) and all different circumstances and I really need to figure out what causes it.

I am working on a site at http://www.2dogsdesign.com/candle

I input some of the EZ Pages and the client entered a few over the last few days. I worked on one myself just yesterday.

Today we had to enter a few to get the merchant account approved - I went in to enter them, hit update and got the dreaded server error. Everything worked fine yesterday.

Again - this has happened very intermittently on several sites over the last year and it is just frustrating the hell out of me....

    Here is the exact error:
    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Here is my error log from the host (just gave you a few lines):

It does not happen on all the pages....and I actually entered the text in through the database...the one page this is giving me the problem is

Which was one that I wound up entering through the database - so there is no formatting or anything.....

Can any help me? The client really wants to enter mroe pages and she cannot and I feel like an idiot that I cannot get this working....the about page and wholesale pages are fine and can be edited......and I tried even adding a new page and that does not work either.....

    Please help?!?!?!?!?!

A 500 error is a SERVER error, and while it may be a result of a php command coming out of ZC, the problem is on the SERVER.

If you have a decent host, they may provide access to the ERROR LOG, and this is where you will get an accurate pointer as to where the breakdown is occurring and why.

There is no more advice to give at this point.... until we can see what the Server's Error Log has been reporting.

THanks Schoolboy - i figured as much....I did post a bit of the error log above is that not what is needed - that came out of the Cpanel and just repeats what it is above for every instance of trying to update the page that occurred?

Is there another file I can provide that may help better troublesheet?

I am hosting with Liquidweb on a virtual dedicated server and have full access to everything...also I have about 10 other sites ont his server and it is not a problem on most sites....

I guess what is baffling is why would it work one day and not the next if nothing in the account has been changed?

What happens if you try to add a completely new EZpage? Create a new one with just one character in it... the letter "a"...

    What happens?

If all OK with this new page, re-open it for editing and copy and paste THIS into it and try updating:

Adding a new page with the A was OK.....

I copied the code from my email that you put into the response that caused the internal server area....so I swung over to the forum to pull the code from your post directly and it worked.

I also tried to copy and paste it into the original page that was just giving me problems and it worked.

I am just baffled....on the page that was giving me trouble...I originally copied in what the client set - because she was getting the error...then when I copied it I got the error....then I removed all formatting from the text using Notepad and tried copying it...still an error...then I typed it all in by hand....and still an error....

    Now it works?!?!?!!?!?

What causes this.....like I said it is VERY intermittent......and I do not see other posts about it so it apparently is not common.....

Jill... what I did (as you saw) was a copy/paste of your privacy notice.

Now... I first "pasted" the text directly into the ZC input window... but noticed it behaved strangely when I tried to add paragraph breaks. I had to hit the [ENTER] key a few times before the paragraph break occurred.

Then I removed the text and copied/pasted it AGAIN... this time into Emerald Editor.

I applied my paragraph / line breaks in Emerald, then copied THAT text, and pasted it into the ZC input window, then as you see, encased it in [code} tags.

I surmise that hidden somewhere in the ORIGINAL text, there is some rogue formatting that PHP doesn't like.

    So... my next question...

What program are you using to compose that text? Are you doing it all in the EZPages editor? Or are you writing it up in a word-processor or wysiwyg html tool, then copy/pasting it into the EZPages editor?

I suspect you're getting formatted text somehow, where the hidden formatting is clashing with the PHP...

Thanks Schoolboy - here are the steps I took......

    client emailed me text
i copied and pasted into zencart
    500 error

I copied and pasted text into notepad to remove formatting
    copied again
    placed into ezpage
    500 error

    typed text into ezpage manually
    500 error

copied text into SQL database from notepad
that took but I cannot edit the pages

So last night I put in what you gave me and it worked....this morning I get a bunch of emails from my client who tried to edit that page and got the error.....although everything input fine....

I am going to take a peak at things and see what else I can figure out....I am not seeing any extraneous code anywhere.....this is very frustrating!!!! But thank you for your time.....

OK, so this morning I deleted all three of the pages I was struggling with yesterday.

I start a brand new page called Returns.

I type in the first 2 paragraphs and hit update. No problems - it saves just fine.

I go back in to the page to type in the last 2 paragraphs.

I get the 500 error when I save it.

This is with me typing it in - no formatting of fonts or anything.

    I am really confused here.......

Just spoke to the host - they changed the mod security settings.....he was not 100% convinced that this is the issue, but keeping fingers crossed - 2 test pages went OK! Schoolboy - thank you.....hopefully I won't be back!!!
