Show products in categories sidebox

Right, I'm sure this has been asked before... probably by myself, but I can't find any information on this online.

Is it possible to display products within the categories sidebox?

For example, the products would be listed under their respective categories (rather like sub categories).

In the past I've simply used sub categories (which contain only one product) to achieve my goal. However, this means I have to sacrifice the actual category listing page.

Any bright ideas?

I haven't used it, and it's pretty old, so I would install it in a test site first.
