Default 138a to 139d upgrade vs. new install

After failed attempts at upgrading from 138a to 139d, I've done a fresh install into an alternate folder on my server intending to make customizations later meanwhile maintaining the present 138a version to stay in business.

I created a new data base imported the old database's data, did the ZC install. Admin & catalog screens load well but admin does not see the db's data, it's as if an empty database. Did a database upgrade, no help.

Deleted everything, created a new & empty database, installed ZenCart 139d, imported the old database's data into the new after the ZC install, still can't see it!

I've checked & rechecked the 2 configure files, they are OK.

I have a 139d installation on another domain/server, works fine but useless on that domain. Have invested too much time & $ into the old domain.

I would greatly appreciate some help!

Your experience is EXACTLY what I was referring to below as my concern for starting this upgrade....thanks for the feedback...makes me think my fear was justified....

You cannot see either the Catalog or the Admin or just the Admin?

Does the Admin directory /admin have a new name on your site? If so, does the configure.php file for:
    /your_admin_dir/includes/configure.php

use that new directory name in place of the /admin ...

Admin and/or catalog both will load fine but are empty of any data.
I've renamed the admin folder, different from the 138a install, & changed the configure file accordingly. Admin wouldn't load without the configure file change.
I changed all back to "admin" to test again but of course didn't make any difference. Still empty pages.

Look in the configure.php files to see which database is being used ...

Then, check to see if in phpMyAdmin if the database contains any products ...

The new database is being used & has all the data from the old one.
I imported the data from the old one thru my servers controlpanel whereas the instructions call for a restore. Could this affect the structure?

When you say "empty pages" do you mean you see no data or that you have blank white pages?

If you have blank white pages, look in the:
    /cache

directory and see what debug log files are in there and what they say ...

The pages you would see with an empty database with all the ZenCart ads.

Are you looking at the database references in:
    /includes/configure.php

    or the one in:
    /v139/includes/configure.php

and make sure you are looking at the files on the server ...

Yes, looking at includes/configure.php and admin/includes/configure.php in my server within the upgraded install.
I'm using the same user ID on both 138a & 139d but different passwords & of course separate folders within my server & domain.
