We can't see the problem when the site is down for maintenance.

You probably have a missing or corrupted define fle somewhere.

Those defines are usually in includes/languages/english/login.php, so that file is missing or corrupted.

If it's in your override folder and the contents look OK, check for an extra character or line at the end of the file.

Thanks for your help I'm using beyond compare to check out the files

the login.php is ok but have overwritten it as a precaution and I have had to enter the defines in includes/languages/english.php but that still doesn't addres the issue or solve all of the problems.

I have also noted the top left hand corner of every page

    <

    where's that coming from?

I am trying.... but seem to be getting further back

    Regards

The last define (HEADING_TITLE) on that page is defined in login.php, so something about that file isn't right.

You'll have to open the files you've edited and find that < at the beginning.

Not to offer another problem, but I wouldn't secure your blog. It isn't necessary, and it's showing the secure/non-secure error in IE.
