I could use a little help with this too...
I also have Zen Cart 1.3.9d with Database Patch Level: 1.3.8, the cart updated yesterday.
I went to the /zc_install/index.php page on my domain and told the database to "Upgrade DB from 1.3.8 to 1.3.9", and it went to a plain white text page that said:
1253 COLLATION 'latin1_general_ci' is not valid for CHARACTER SET 'utf8'
in:
[CREATE TABLE goto_counter_history_clean as SELECT * FROM goto_counter_history WHERE 1 GROUP BY startdate COLLATE latin1_general_ci;]
and now on the cart admin page I see this warning:
WARNING: Site is currently set to Down for Maintenance ...
NOTE: You cannot test most Payment and Shipping Modules in Maintenance mode
Can any tell me what to do now? Thanks!

I have the exact same thing as KathyM. Anyone got any suggestions? I even tried deleting the counter_history table and recreating it...nothing.
Nevermind...this link has fixed my problem.

Thanks for the link RichiesRiches! I wish I know what to do with that info.
I opened the zc_install/includes/installer_params.php file and there's no DB_CHARSET in it. What did you do?

They're probably using v1.3.9e instead of v1.3.9d
