Product categories w/subcategories cannot be displayed

No product categories IF the category contains subcategories can be displayed after new install w/ existing DB upgrade. Same symptoms if I go to the default template.

Categories without Sub-categories appear to be OK.

URL displayed indicates that of the product category.
Breadcrumb display indicates the main category.

Page being displayed in the main page (same as clicking HOME)

What am I overlooking? I call myself following the instructions. This is my test site prior to moving it to the live site.

What is your setting for Configuration > Layout Settings > Categories - Always open to show subcategories?

That setting is '0' but that's the same as the live site. Live site is functioning as intended; sandbox is not. Tried "1" but that doesn't correct the functionality. Homepage is still displayed when the category is clicked.

OK, I see: it's not that the category is not displaying, but that the define_main_page content is also displaying above it on the page. Unfortunately I can't take any more time here now - I'm late for leaving for a two week business trip.

Glenn, TNX for taking the time to look.

I didn't scroll down enough to see the category items at the bottom of the page.

That'll give me something to look at, though I don't have the background to do much more than look.

Maybe someone else will have other ideas in the meantime.
