Coupon for dollar off per item

I've searched but my question is a little different. Let's say I have an item selling for $1.00. I want to give a customer $0.25 off for just this one item. I know I can use restrictions to limit it to this one item but here's the tricky part. The item is not always $1.00 but I always want to give $0.25 off. (A script imports the item price based upon current market values, it changes constantly). This mean a coupon percentage won't work. I need a coupon to discount the item price by a fixed dollar amount.

Can a coupon do this? If not, what other options do I have?

Create the Discount Coupon ...

Set it up to be 0.25 off as an Amount and NOT as a Percentage ...

After you save the Discount Coupon, then edit the Restrictions ...

Set the Categories to:
Top DENY

Set the 1 Product as ALLOW

Unless the products_id changes, this Discount Coupon will be valid just for the 1 Product for $0.25 off the Price regardless of what the Price is set to at the time that the Discount Coupon is used ...

Thanks for the suggestion. If I understand correctly, that will deduct $0.25 from the items but I need it to reduce the item price by $0.25. If they buy one, it will deduct $0.25 from their order. If they buy 50 of this one item, it will deduct $12.50.

Anyway to get the coupon to function at the item price level instead of the item total?

Sorry ... I misunderstood ... no it will not manage the discount on an amount per quantity ...

For that, you would need some customized coding ...

Not a problem, thanks for confirming. How much work will it be to customize the coding? It's probably more than I can do myself, so am I looking at a small, medium or big job here? ;-)

If $0.25 off quantity 1 is the same as $12.50 off 50 ... are you sure that you cannot us a percentage off on the item?

$1.00 - 25% = $0.25

$50 - 25% = $12.50

Couldn't you just set the Discount Coupon to be 25% off and set the restriction to this 1 item?

If you use the Quantity Discounts contribution from the Free Software Add-Ons at the top of the page, you can discount by an amount per item, and restrict the items discounted using the exclude_product() user exit.

I wish I could. :-) But the thing that makes this tough is the item price is not handled the regular way. A script runs every 5 mins, updating the product price based upon current market conditions so the discount of $0.25 is not always the same percentage.

@swguy The reason for the coupon is so that the discount can be offered only to certain customers. If I understand your contribution, I can't limit who gets the discount. If I'm wrong, please let me know.
