Limit number of products that can be purchased

I would like to limit the quantities of products for purchase that a customer can make to a specific number when availability of that product is limited. In other words; if the product limit is 2 per customer, how do i keep the customer from logging back in to the system and purchasing an additional "max quantity"?

That would require extensive custom programming andwould not preclude them creating another account with a different email
As the intent is to sell....let them buy them all

i use the system to give products and services away.
