display subcategories, and sub,sub categories

How can I have subcategories for a category show up underneith the category image. I am looking to give customers a quicker way to find what they are looking for. I may want to show 4-5 subcategories then a "more" link after if they don't see what they want.

Basically when you click on a category link from the menu, it opens up subcategories. I want those subcategories to have links displayed beneith them for the subcateogries within those subcategories. I want to do this for every subcategory until I have reached the product listing page.

This is my old site, that was built using HTML however, the mod you suggested is not what I was looking for. If you look at this site and notice the sub category links displayed under categories in the body of the site, this is what I am looking for. As you click into the site, these sub category links are displayed until you get to the page where products are listed.

I have gone nuts looking all over admin, thinking that there MUST be a simple way to display subcategories always.....instead of just during navigation. Why is this not an option???

For the subcategories to hide makes it a lot more work for my customers to find anything. This should be a common admin selection, not something I have to go into 500 files to try to figure out the hard way (since my mind is apparently too logical for automagical php language....sorry).

You don't want to display subcats in the center "always" - e.g. on the Shipping & Returns information page.
It is standard behavior for all the immediate subcategories of the currently selected category to display in the center. Getting the subcats of those subcats to also display would take custom coding.
The Uncollapsed Categories Tree mod for the categories sidebox, combined with some of the Categories Dressing code, would be a base for getting this display in the center column.

If you want the main categories (which are subcats of "Top") to display on the homepage center, set Configuration > Layout Settings > Categories - Always Show on Main Page ->set to 1
and
Main Page - Opens with Category ->set to 0.
