How to link catagories in a horizontal way?

I can't seem to figure how to have my categories and products in a horizontal menu, instead of in a category side bar. I have tried several CSS Horizontal menus but I have not been able to figure how to link my categories to the menu. If anybody has a tutorial, or if there is a way to do it via Ez pages or however I can get it done.

The default built in one is
admin > config > layout settings > Categories-Tabs Menu ON/OFF > set to "1"

Can be styled or extended with one of the 3rd party modules in the free software add ons link above left
