Limit number of products a customer can buy from a category

Hi,

I'd like to be able to set a limit on the number of items a customer can buy from a specific category. On my site, we sell cosmetic samples. Each sample is a product in the "Samples" category and a different coloured cosmetic. I have limitted each product to "Product Qty Maximum 1", so customers can only buy 1 of each sample. However they can still buy 1 of every type (/colour) of product in the category.

I would like to be able to restrict the number of products per category. so that the customer can only buy 3 samples for exampel.

Is there a way of doing this / a module or addon to do it?

There isn't a standard module to do this that I'm away of, but it would be fairly easy to create this. You would need to add a new field to the category table, and admin, and then just run a check on the products at the checkout and shopping cart pages to display the error.

We have done a similar thing for minimum order quantities from each category.
