If on a MAC you should use MAMP
Zen-Venom Get Bitten
Yes it does. Until recently we were using Xampp on Mac, Windows and Linux to do local testing of a wide variety of Zen Cart sites and developments.
The until recently is because we now do most of our development on Linux workstations using a native LAMP server, but there's no reason to believe that Xampp would have suddenly fallen apart.

MAMP has a cool widget to stop and start the servers, but once they're running they just sit in the background doing their job.
I've used both and, widget aside, there's not much to choose between them, unless you want to get down into very specific stuff about what's included in each (both have all the stuff you'd normally need) in which case a visit to each's website to see the current state would be the best way forward.

thanks for responding. Was waiting for more answers but thanks for taking the time to do this. Both of you. I installed XAMPP because it was what the book said and apparently I installed the latest version properly. Now I just have to install Zencart. Thanks for your help.
