The slider used in this template is the easy slider. If you google it you will find instructions on how to control the speed o fthe slide show.

You can turn on the ezpages sidebox.

Yes, I have set the sort order on the EZ Page and the Layout Boxes Control menus but it just refuses to show.

This is not a template related problem. See the FAQs section for a tutorial on how to set up an ezpage and maybe you will find a step that you missed.
