Using $_SESSION outside Zen-Cart?

I would like to use Zen-Cart's session variables on other pages outside the Zen-Cart directory. I have done several Google searches and it seems that there are a lot of people that have the same problem and I cannot find anything about this topic in the Wiki.

For a previous installation of Zen-Cart I called session_set_save_handler() and wrote my own read() handler to pass to it that used Zen-Cart's database to reopen the session.

Now that I have upgraded to the newest version of Zen-Cart, this code no longer works. Is there a good reference on the web that can help get the ball rolling?

I have been going through my code and have noticed that I am getting the correct value from sessions.value before I call session_start(). Maybe my cookie settings are off?

If anyone finds an online source for dealing with Zen-Cart $_SESSION outside of Zen-Cart directories, it would be much appreciated.
