Can't stop subcategory creation

I am a newbie; just installed 1.3.9 with a new template. In admin, catalog, categories/products - I am trying to creating categories and then put products in the categories. When I create the first category, I get a message "NOTE: Category has SubCategories
Products cannot be added ."

I have tried several times by deleting products and categories, but it doesn't work for me. I also switched between several templates so check on those parameters.

I followed the directions from FAQ regarding creating categories and products, but I still get the message. I noticed the problem first when I went to edit a product and the description would be blank.

I'm sure it's something trivial, but it's driving me a little nuts. Thanks in advance. BTW, I installed through Fantastico in Lunarpages.

Categories can have either sub-categories or products

Yes, I know about the sub-categories and products. Does that mean from catalog...categories/products...create category will always create a subcategory? Then what is the main category?

And, from catalog...categories/products, there is no create products button until I create a category. But, as soon as I create a category, I get the subcategory message.

An empty category or an empty sub-category can have products added
Your message states that the category has sub-categories - - So it is not empty

Then what is the main category?

Something like

Shirts(main Cat)
        T-Shirts
        Polo shirts
        Dress Shirts
        Etc

Where the main cat only has sub-cats - - no products

Going with the flow. I created the category "Clothes" and then created sub-categories, "pants" and "shoes." I put products into "pants" and "shoes" but when I go back to the product to edit, the product description and name disappear. The rest is still there: date available, image, quantity, etc.
