Product Linking Problems HELP!

Read tutorials and forum on linking (plus Zen Way Book) and only got more confused. I am not even clear anymore if this requires and add on, done in admin, or done in stylesheet.

I go to the product page in admin and the linking button shows at the top of the page, however it does not show to the right of the product listing where the activation button, meta and so on are showing.

So how do you link when the button does not appear for use?

Click the "c" or copy
There you can select to link it or actually copy it
