How to change my footer text?

I've read a lot of the questions regarding this, but haven't found an answer that works for me.
I hired a web designer to make my site, and at the bottom, she has written the copyright date. Now that it's a new year, I am wanting to change it as well as edit the rest of the text.
How can I change this without having to go into the custom template (which I do not have, the web designer has it)?

If it is on your web server then you also have it
And assuming that they followed the template override system then it would be at
/includes/templates/your_template_name/common/tpl_footer.php

FTP that file to your PC and use a plain text code editor to see what is there
