Truncating copy in the Product Listing page

I'm having an issue with ZC 1.3.9h and the problem is that my description for each of my items is too long and makes it looks like we offer free shipping on everything when in fact we don't.

but there's two problems. For starters, my more info link appears as MORE_INFO_TEXT which isn't at all what I want. In fact, I really don't want a link at all. I'd just rather control how long or short the excerpt should really be unless, like WordPress, there's a place to place copy for an excerpt. Which there isn't. Any idea how to control this?

admin -> configuration -> product listing -> Display Product Description

You can turn it off or set the number of characters to show.
