Default My admin keeps pushing me back to the login page, after adding SSL cert

If anyone could help me with this same question, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Using Zen Cart 1.3.9d
I have tried setting the details in the admin configure.php and the non-admin configure.php files as described in https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=14.
I am using a shared SSL certificate.
The shopping cart switches seamlessly to the secure pages as needed for the shoppers. However, when I try to login to my admin panel from:
    https://www..myshareddomain.com/~myusername/admin
the login is accepted and I see my admin panel, but then anything I click knocks me back out to the login page.

Please help walk me through what I might be doing wrong. I would really like to be able make the login page of the admin panel secure.
    Thank you.

I am just starting to figure this out so I could be wrong but I am thinking you didnt really need to do anything for the shared cert to work?? You change the configure files if you are going to use private ssl. I think you need a private ssl to do what you want.

And this I really am not sure about but I thought I read one of the 1.3.9x versions was to fix a security issue ??any security updates you will get the benefits of having if you upgrade to the newest version ?

Thanks for taking the time to look at my question and give your answer. I wonder if I'm not asking the question correctly.
When I log into my admin panel, I want to be able to access the login page by an https:// address rather than an http:// address.
With the config files set as default, I can't log in at all from https - I get "there is a security error" message. When I adjust the /admin/includes/config file as described in the tutorial, I can log in, but then anything I click logs me back out. I'm sure there has to be a way to log in securely, I just need someone to tell me what I'm doing wrong!

    Thanks.

    .
You said you were using a shared ssl , I dont think this can be done with a shared ssl ?? you need to talk to your host and get you a private ssl to do it that way I think? I could be wrong though maybe somebody that knows for sure will drop in.
