I actually had the same problem. First solution was to pad the numbers, but aesthetically, I don't like that. So I tried the sort order field in each product (i.e., product 1 has a sort order of 1 and product 10 a sort order of 10.)
Had no effect.

Please help me sort this out :) I have tried several combinations and I still get random stuff in the categories and sub cats.
I don't have a lot of products, but I am getting random products in the category and sub category levels. I have tried different variations. I am using the sort order in the product information field when they are first created. The categories have the sort order as well. Hope this makes sense of the final layout of my menu. Or not final.
