Default Logic of Chaining One Product to One Tax Class?

Can anyone explain why a product is chained to a single tax class?

To me it would seem that the whole point would be for the product to be applied across many tax classes, dependent on where the buyer is located in relationship to the store. I understand how to build everything, and it all makes sense until I have to nail a product down to one tax class.

It makes me think I need a whole new zencart site for all the rest of the states outside of my own.

I gotta be missing something somewhere. What is it?

Sounds like you're treating "Tax Class" as though it means "Tax Rate".

At this time you are not required to collect taxes outside your own state unless you have a presence in those other states. Please consult with your accountant and/or attorney regarding sales tax collection.

the logic of class being used as rate was it, thanks. I created an encompassing class and added the zones to it, looks good.

Actually, In my particular business, I'm required to collect a federal fee across all the US (8%) . I also should be collecting a dollar amount (as opposed to a percentage amount) that could be a unique for each state. Then for my own state I need to add sales tax.
