    You could probably start by comparing your general.php with one from a fresh v1.3.9h download, to get a sense of your differences.

    It would be best if you were to put back the original Zen Cart code for the version you are running.
    If you've installed addons which overwrite files with older code then you'll need to merge the changes the addon makes instead of blindly overwriting the original core files.

    Many thanks. Can I get confirmation that it will be satisfactory to constrain my search to general.php in this instance (and hope anything mod'ed is also commented)

    No, I wouldn't consider that to be sufficient scope, because I've NO idea how many or which files you've blindly replaced by outdated code from old incompatible addons.
    You need to do a THOROUGH inspection, hence the link I posted earlier.

    Thanks, this worked for me. I needed to keep this site going on a new server just for ref not public view, so great.
    my new site is 1.9
