Being notified when a new customer joins website?

Is there a way of being notified when you get a new customer join up to the website and also being notified when they place an order

yes

admin --> Configuration --> email options

have a read of the various options, and you should be able to get what you want.

although by default you should be getting a notification email when an order is placed unless you turned it off.
