Is there an add on or script that can be used to enable a viewer to email a friend details of the page they are viewing ?

Just make sure that the "Allow Guest To Tell A Friend" option is set to "false", so that only logged in customers can use it, otherwise it's an open relay for spammers.

Admin - Catalog - Product Types - Edit Layout to turn off the button on the product info page.
