main and subcategories

I have two distinct offerings of products and I would like to set up two categories and the rest will sit under the appropriate category..like this:

Crystals
-->Natural
-->Tumbled
-->Polished

Crystal KaleidoScapes
-->Professional Prints
-->Note Cards
-->Window Decals


Something like that. Are there any instructions that can help me accomplish this goal? I looked in the categories but I dont see how I can do it. Looked at the product types, but there is no where to add others. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated!

just create 2 top categories and sub-categories under those 2 ...
have a look at erosfashions.com and see if thats wat u want.

nope, don't think that is it. Those look to be one list. I want a header, then a list that is indented under it.

I do not know how to create a top category and subcategories. That is why I wrote the question to begin with :)

I thought about that. Is it possible to have TWO category boxes and if so, how would that work? I just want to have my two product offerings in separate places instead of all in one long list basically :) I only see ONE category box in the layout boxes controller.

You are talking about the categories sidebox display, not just the conceptual organization of your products. If you want the top categories to be functional categories, where you can click one and just its subcats will display in the center, you would want an expanded categories mod. There are several, but fragfutter's Uncollapsed Categories Tree may be the best. It is available from his website, or bundled as an option in Categories Dressing in Free Addons.

If you want more control over which subcats will display when, try Categories Dressing which has the ability to customize the levels etc.

If you don't need the categories functionally subject to top cats, but merely displayed under headings that tell where they belong, you can make headings above any desired categories in Categories Dressing and group categories in sub-boxes if desired.

Since your last post came in while I was writing, I will elaborate on my comments. Cat Dressing is built to allow categories to be grouped into (potentially) distinct boxes with headings for each box or set of categories. The mod download page in Free Addons has notes about the location of demo screenshots in the support thread that will give you some visuals of possibilities.

I doubt you'll find anything functional that is simpler... though you might be able to use Ajeh's instructions on repurposing the Document Categories sidebox by setting product type restrictions for your second set of categories (search the forum).
