Can I require entering a referral code to create account?

Is there a way to use the referral code ei: require a 3 digit number like 200,300,400,500 to create an account? I need to require the entry of one of these codes and if the code is wrong it acts like a password and not allow a user to create an account.

The reason, having outside salesman, we would like to use the refferal code because in the admin section we can actually do a report under each of these codes. We do not want the general public to be able to create an account without a salesman's code that is only issued by the salesman. Is there any way to accomplish this? Thanks in advance!

This will require custom coding and an additional DB record to keep these "codes"
