Spacing between lines on main page under Categories

I would like to space out the items under Categories on main page as they seem very close together. Is there an easy way to do this? I dont want a whole line left between the items just a small gap.

Can I add a small image to the left of all the items above? I have added a smiley (above) where I would like an image, but one on every line.

You could play with a rule like

#categories a {line-height: 1.5em;}

This will also space out any category names that wrap to a second line, so if you have this situation it will not be a good solution for you.
Categories Dressing will give you complete control over every aspect of the categories sidebox, including item spacing and icons (list-item markers).

Yes, Cat Dressing works fine in v1.3.9. It will also work as is in v1.5.0.

I know this is an old thread, but this solution may help someone.

My Sister, who is NOT Zen-Cart knowledgeable spaced hers out and it seems to work. I am still looking for a problem but have not found one yet.

What she did was create new categories and sort them between existing ones. There are no names on the empty categories and clicking in the sidebox on one in the sidebox does not do anything.

We are using the template Blue Strip Reloaded.

That obviously works visually, as the spacer categories have null names so there is nothing to click on. Of course, it's all or nothing, and you can't control the exact spacing, which seems a bit much. You also have "junk" markup in there, which doesn't necessarily matter to visitors but may to Google.

You could also accomplish the spacing and control it precisely with a couple of CSS rules:

#categories a {display: block;}
#categories a+br {display: none;}

Add margin-top or margin-bottom or whatever you like to the block items to control spacing.
You can get the same effect you have just with the
#categories a {display: block;}
rule, as that will leave the extra <br /> making a double space between real categories without adding dummies.
