up graded ZC no email confirms or orders posting

I just upgraded to Zencart Version Update 1.3.8->1.3.9h

1. my credit card orders go through to the processer Merchant One just fine and batch into my business account.

2. I get no email confirmation nor does the client
3. the customer gets a blank screen after hitting confirm
4. there is no record of the order in admin
5. the inventory does not change (most of my items are one of a kind)
6. I had to have the host upgrade a data base as i received that message on zencart admin
7. all of my previous orders and customers are still in a data base
8. i can add new customers and receive welcome email.

databases match in zencart/admin/includes and zencart/includes/configure.php

used zencart for 3 years before upgrading

just an update to my problem of no email notifications and nothing happening in zencart admin
the blank screen that appears has this in the browser window
.../zencart/index.php?main_page=checkout_process&response=1&responsetext=SUCCESS&authcode=12 3456&transactionid=1497223508&avsresponse=N&cvvresponse=N&orderid=&type=sale&res ponse_code=100&username=........
which to me indicates that the trouble lies with zencart receiving the response from the credit card processing company

still hoping for some help, in the mean time trying to solve it.
looked at the error de-bug log and found that line 39 of admin/includes/functions/general.php is receiving too many characters.

the coding on this php in the upgrade is different than the coding from my old admin.
line 22 is blank in old admin
line 22 in new "session_write_close();"

there are other differences,

question: should I replace the new general.php with the old one?
