Shopping cart info in header

Hi,
I'm trying to add a section with the shopping cart info in my header, similar to the one on this site http://www.craftyalien.com/ , I've been looking through previous posts but just can't figure it out! Can it be done? Do I need a mod?

Also, where can I style the navigation bar (home, log in) to change background colour when I hover over and add more link?

That might be a sensible idea, I was trying to do everything from scratch but I don't know CSS and PHP very well, I was biting more than I could chew!!
