why don't prev/next links go in same order as listing?

prods go in order dec21 11am ; dec21 2pm; dec22 11am dec22 2pm

and sort order is 1, 2, 3, 4

so why when clicking the prev next buttons for listings does it go out of that order?

Configuration > Product Info > Previous Next - Sort Order. You probably want option 6.
