Discount coupon for one item confusion

Hi, i have read a number of posts for setting a discount coupon for one item, whats confusing me is the setting of catagories top to deny etc what and where is this?

My site basically has a number of catagories, so i dont wan't to affect any other product

I have one product on its own in one catagory, i want to enable a discount coupon that a user enters and he/she gets £2 off

I have no other discount coupons in use
