Category image resizing works sometimes, sometimes doesn't

A lot of the images from the second link are the same as the images from the first link.

I do not recall doing anything different with the options. Why are the images even looking on the first link's category, and awful on the second? Did I miss a checkbox somewhere?

No, they aren't. The images in the second link appear to be coming from the Image Handler mod.

I am new to zencart, I am used to Magento.

I have yet to utilize the image handler mod. I am adding category pictures by browsing to a category, clicking the green E button, browsing to the desired JPG, uploading it, and clicking save. What is going on differently when I go about this process for the categories in the second link, vs. the ones in the first link? Can you give me an idea of what direction I should be looking in for a solution?

Looking at the properties of the images in your first link, the folder they're stored in is bmz_cache, which I believe is unique to the Image Handler mod. Are you sure you haven't installed that, maybe in conjunction with some sort of lightbox thing ?
