changing .php to .htm ?

Hi everyone, is there a was to change the page .php extensions to a more search engine friendly extension like .htm or .html ? this is what all pages have "index.php?main_page=contact_us" I just want it to say the page name.htm or just the page name.php would work instead of all the giant extension on it ?

.html instead of .php will make zero difference to search engines. If you really want to have "pretty" URLs, CEON URI Mapping is widely considered the best and most flexible mod. If you do rewrite, you can't get rid of everything after index.php or it will not be able to know what page to go to. The recommended form of rewriting would contain only a meaningful string of text, without "index" or any .html which is just a marker for what kind of file is (supposedly) generating the result, and not meaningful.
