alpha sorter in upper level caterories

This works (as designed) when I am in the category with products but I need it to include sub-cats so that it can be displayed in an upper level category. I have been trying to assign the cPath in product_listing_alpha_sorter but have not succeeded and I can find no reference on this forum.

Basically, I need it to search like the advanced search using the "By Descriptions" option.
