"Mixed" shipping - one order, several suppliers, how to address shipping costs?

Suppose I have a website selling products, some of which are manufactured by me, some of which are manufactured by other private suppliers, and some of which come from big dropshippers.

A customer places an order for five items, two of which are manufactured by me, one by another small supplier, one provided by Dropshipper A, and one provided by Dropshipper B. That's four different packages - which will surely cost more to ship than if all five items went into one package.

How to handle this?

I haven't used it, but I understand the ceon advanced shipping module (not free) will do pretty much anything you want done concerning shipping. You can't do as you described with a stock Zencart installation.
