The module /includes/templates/template_default/templates/tpl_modules_main_product_image.php uses javascript to insert the product's main image, with a '<noscript>' addition.
Why is this? Why not simply include the HTML associated with the link to the product's large image?
Update: It's done since the <script> version performs a javascript popup to display the image while the <noscript> version simply links to the popup_image page in a new window.
