red flag Questions while I'm upgrading ...

    Hello.

Being new to Zen, I am getting a bit bogged down!
I have made backups of the database; the zen cart files of the store already installed (http://kmegd.com).
    I have installed WinMerge.
Now this is where I am getting stuck.........

I did not customize the website, I just used the original template.
so how do I compare files/folders in WinMerge, or I should say, Which folders/files should I compare?

Sorry for any inconvenience; but would like a 'push' so to speak in the right direction.
    Can anyone help on this?
    Would appreciate advice/help given.
    Thanking you.

Really, you need to compare everything against the original versions of those files.

So, the old /admin/ against the new /admin/ ... and all subfolders.
The old /includes/ against the new /includes/ ... and all subfolders.

Then you also need to compare your customizations,
ie: your own template against the original, like /includes/template_default/ against /includes/NAME_OF_YOUR_TEMPLATE/ and all subfolders
Similar with /includes/languages/english/ against /includes/languages/english/NAME_OF_YOUR_TEMPLATE/ and all subfolders
and /includes/languages/english.php against /includes/languages/NAME_OF_YOUR_TEMPLATE/english.php ... if you have one
and /includes/modules/ against /includes/modules/NAME_OF_YOUR_TEMPLATE/ if you have one
and so on ... everywhere you've customized something.

    OK, thanks very much.
I know what to look for now.
BTW, we had many troubles with hacking into our website, so in the end I did not customize.
Will this make any difference when I upload the new upgrade?
Thank you for all your help and advice.

Hacks on 1.3.9h? If there were 'lots' of hacks as you suggest then are you sure it isn't your host server that is being hacked to gain access to your store? Do you know which files had the hacks applied? If you do not do a full clean up then chances are you will carry the hack scripts over into your upgrade if you are not careful.

Good advice.. I had a client who (despite my warnings) decided to upgrade one site but not the other.. The site she opted not to upgrade got hacked.. I opted to do a clean install and only convert her existing data. We just re-did all the add-on installs from scratch..

Both messages are telling you that you need to delete the zc_install folder from your site's files on the server before you can go any further.

OK, done that and everything is as it was, thanks.

What is the next step so that I don't make any more mistakes....
This is my first time at an upgrade and being new to Zen I am not too sure of myself but am a quick learner.
Would appreciate you help in this. Looking forward to your reply.

    Deleted the folders and files
    - /docs
    - /extras
    - /zc_install
    - /install.txt (this file can be removed, too)

If you do not intend to sell downloadable products, then also delete:
    - /download
    - /media
    - /pub

    Check http://www.zen-cart.com/wiki/index.p...ecommendations for further advice

    Hope this helps!
