Can I move the categores after running the store for 2 years?

my zen-cart is 1.38a.

Hi, I have three root categories T-shirt,Sweat, underwear.

There are many products and linked products under these 3 categores.

I have runned the store for 2 years, so thousands of orders have been created by customers.


Now I want to create an 'Apparel' category and move the 3 categories( T-shirt,Sweat, underwear) to under 'Apparel'.

what I want is to make 'Apparel' the root category and other categores as the second level categories.

How to do it?
Is it a big risk leads to data mess since I have had many orders?

The first piece of advice anyone is going to give you is to upgrade to 1.3.9h minimum or 1.5. It is VERY common knowledge that 1.3.8 is a hackers dream come true...

In answer to your actual question you can simply have your 3 old categories as sub categories to your new apparel category. Best recreate a new xml sitemap too though for search engines.

but upgrade seems a very heavy task for me, there are some many versions of 1.39.

Do I have to upgrade it one by one from 1.39a to 1.39h?
or can I just go directly to 1.39h?

Off the top of my head the upgrade instructions do suggest step by step upgrade, but some changes are minimal. It's worth starting a thread to ask that specific question though.
Also just do a quick search of hack attempts on your version in the search bar above in header, you will be shocked...
